Line 2: The extant text, as reconstructed, speaks of "their brothers the priests," an expression whose meaning is unclear. Perhaps the writer, who used a mixture of scripts, wrote a Hebrew nun in place of an Aramaic waw, intending to write the word 'his [masc.] brother.' Pinhas may thus have brought the offerring for himself and for his brother. As the offerer's name and title indicate, this is a priestly inscription. Several of the Mt. Gerizim inscriptions belonging to priests have been found, in which the exclusively priestly Neo-Hebrew script was used. However, here there is a mixture of the Aramaic and the Neo-Hebrew scripts. The Neo-Hebrew letters used here are waw, kaf, and samekh. The significance of this inscription, in addition to its peculiar script, lies in the fact that it is a standard dedicatory inscription and not a temple inscription. This teaches that the Neo-Hebrew script was also used for nonpriestly inscriptions.
